DEL VALLE, Texas -- A Travis County Correctional Facilities inmate in Del Valle who woke up Thursday morning in minimum security will now go to sleep in maximum security.
Deputies say 42-year-old Edmond Henry overpowered a Travis County maintenance employee around 7 a.m. Thursday, kicked the worker out of his truck and stole the vehicle, leaving the jail in it.
A few minutes later, an off-duty Bastrop County Sheriff's Office corporal on his way home from work says he witnessed a white truck going in the wrong direction on Highway 71 in Del Valle before he crossed into the grass median.
“I thought he was an intoxicated driver, so I activated my lights and attempted to pull him over,” said Cpl. Brandon Horak, who called for backup when Henry refused to stop.
Travis County officials say Henry took the stolen maintenance truck down Terry Lane, lost control and crashed through a metal gate, hitting a utility pole.
Deputies say Henry jumped out of the stolen truck and took off running. He was found hiding under a trailer home less than a quarter of a mile away.
Roger Wade, a spokesperson for the Travis County Sheriff’s Department says the agency is reviewing policies and procedures and has already made some changes.
The county worker who Henry kicked out of the truck has minor injuries and is expected to be OK.
Henry had been in jail since March 6 for auto theft. He now faces additional felony charges.
