GRAPEVINE, Texas - A search is under way for a suspect who allegedly stabbed a Miami-Dade police officer with a pair of sunglasses Monday night in Grapevine.
According to a statement released by Grapevine police, officers were in the midst of transporting the suspect, 42-year-old Alberto Morales, from Nevada to Florida by plane when the suspect began acting strange. After landing at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport during a scheduled layover, officers decided to rent an SUV and continue the remainder of the transportation by vehicle based on Morales' behavior. the statement read.
During a stop at about 11 p.m., one officer went inside a Walmart Supercenter, located off Ira E. Woods Ave and State Highway 114 in Grapevine, while the other officer waited with Morales. Morales allegedly stabbed the officer multiple times with a pair of sunglasses and fled the scene in shackles.
The officer was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery and is expected to recover, read the statement from Grapevine police.
Police said Morales is considered armed and dangerous. According to police, Morales' past crimes include kidnapping with a weapon, aggravated battery and sexual battery with a deadly weapon. Anyone who spots Morales is asked to call 911 and not approach the suspect.
As police continue their search for the suspect, school doors will remain locked as a security precaution within the Grapevine Colleyville Independent School District, according to a statement released by the district Tuesday morning.
