SHERMAN, Texas — It may be hard to imagine wooly mammoths roaming through North Texas, but scientists from Dallas have unearthed the proof.
Someone found a bone in a creek wall in Sherman a few months ago. When archaeologists started digging last week, they found more intriguing remains.
An expert at SMU will try to date the fossils, which could go back 60,000 years.
"The quality of the condition of the bones... it's a very important find," said paleontologist Richard Zach. "A lot of times you don't find bones that are as preserved as this."
If the excavation continues to uncover more mammoth bones, the dig could last for months.
The fossils will eventually go on display at the Dallas Museum of Nature and Science.
