SAN ANTONIO -- A pilot for the San Antonio Police Department accidentally  shot himself in the hand Wednesday morning, according to the department.

Police said the Blue Eagle chopper pilot accidentally discharged the weapon as he was transferring his gun from his uniform holster to another holster.

The officer was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries after calling in his own injury, according to SAPD. Police said the incident will still be reviewed as an officer-involved shooting.

The man is a 19-year veteran with the department.

The accident happened at the Stinson Airport, in the 1100 block of 99th Street, where SAPD's helicopter detail is assigned.

Earlier this week, police chief William McManus unveiled two new Airbus helicopters that will eventually replace the department's two older Blue Eagle air crafts.
