A baggage handler at the San Antonio International Airport is accused of stealing from travelers.
The number of victims is unclear. However, following a sting, the 23-year-old was taken away to jail.
Calvin Lee Arrington was arrested on a charge of theft---not exceeding $20,000.
According to the San Antonio Police, an uptick in mysterious thefts from passengers’ luggage turned into a criminal investigation. Investigators say for several months valuables were vanishing from travelers’ luggage. Airport police, SAPD and the TSA tracked the crimes until they had a suspect.
“It was hard to pin down where the theft was occurring,” Sgt. Javier Salazar.
He says the authorities ran a sting Sunday using police property as a dangling carrot. Salazar says their suspect took the bait. Police say he stole their equipment. In fact, investigators say the contracted bag handler had ripped off two other airport customers by that time. The authorities say they were able to return a stolen computer to a victim.
Arrington reportedly had ample access to luggage. Salazar says what’s more disturbing is Arrington had security clearance where passengers can board planes.
Police are looking for travelers who think they may have fallen victim to the theft. Victims are asked to call SAPD or TSA investigators.
Salazar says the San Antonio airport doesn’t have a lot of theft which is what sent up a red flag in this case.
According to police, Arrington worked as a contracted baggage handler at the airport for less than two years.
