AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- A Central Texas man will serve life in prison without parole after his capital murder conviction in the death of the mother of his high school-age daughter’s 24-year-old girlfriend.

A Travis County jury deliberated about an hour before returning its verdict against Jose Alfonso Aviles. Prosecutors say Aviles fatally shot 57-year-old Maria Hurtado and her 24-year-old daughter, Norma Hurtado in April 2001.

Police had said Aviles was outraged over Norma Hurtado’s lesbian relationship with his daughter. A police affidavit had said Aviles sent threatening text messages to Norma Hurtado, threatening to kill her and her mother in at least one message.

The life sentence without parole was automatic with the conviction since prosecutors did not seek the death penalty.
