AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin-Travis County EMS crews are reporting several vehicle crashes around Austin, including one which involved 20 cars, due to icy roads.

Around 6 a.m. EMS tweeted that there had been a "surge of vehicle crashes" near U.S. 183 and MoPac. Around 6:15 a.m. they reported a 20-car collision on MoPac near Parmer Lane on the overpass.

Since 5 a.m. EMS has responded to 72 collisions. Seven of those were rollovers, and three were pin-ins.

More than 20 crashes needing EMS assistance occurred Tuesday after midnight. They were all in the Northwest Austin area, which includes MoPac, Parmer Lane, North U.S. 183 and State Highway 45.

EMS reported around 7:15 a.m. that there was a collision involving a school bus hitting a guard rail in the 11400 block of Cherry Hollow Crossing in Leander. Seven students and the driver were involved.

Austin police have reported 155 crashes around Austin since 5 a.m. Tuesday. Chief Acevedo says police are responding to about 40 crashes per hour. Two patrol units were rear-ended.

Williamson County reports crews have responded to 26 accidents as of 5 a.m. Round Rock police report 41 collisions since 5 a.m. Two of those involved injuries. Three of them involved police cars.
