Historic wedding venue sold after North Texas zoning dispute

PLANO, Texas –– It was a historic home, providing a beautiful backdrop for brides for years. That's now in the past. 

After a dispute with the city of Plano, the owners of the Carpenter House sold it to a young couple who will make it their own home. That means all the antiques and everything inside the 115-year-old residence has to go.

The owners of the Carpenter house say they have no hard feelings toward city leaders, who, they claim, gave them no other choice but to sell. 

Pat Black said she won't be at the estate sale, which starts Thursday. After 13 years of memories and running a successful wedding venue, it would be just too tough. 

"It's hard," Black said. "I have to say it's been a long journey, and it's been difficult."

The Carpenter House is located in the middle of a neighborhood. Some of those neighbors complained about noise and parking. The zoning was for a bed and breakfast, not an assembly hall.

The Blacks offered up a compromise to shorten their hours and keep music indoors. But Plano city leaders would not change the zoning. 

As a result, the Blacks could no longer host weddings, and they put the historic house up for sale. Now that they found a buyer, everything inside must go. 

"We’ve got 100 white chairs," said the owner. "And there are not a lot of people who need 100 white folding chairs."

The four-day estate sale features everything from antiques and art to furniture and linens. 

"If you're putting on a wedding by yourself or your daughter, this would be a fabulous place to come because you could not possibly buy or even rent for some of the prices we put on these things," said Anita Hall of A Family Estate Sale, who is running the four-day event.

The estate sale begins at 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon and runs through Sunday. The Carpenter House is located at 1211 East 16th Street in Plano.
