Former customs officer gets 11-year sentence

McALLEN, Texas—A federal judge in Brownsville has sentenced a former customs officer to more than 11 years in prison for smuggling illegal immigrants into the country, taking bribes and possessing cocaine.

Sergio Lopez Hernandez was a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer in Brownsville.

The 41-year-old former officer had pleaded guilty in April to taking took more than $150,000 in bribes. In return, he let illegal immigrants and drugs to pass through his lane at the B & M International Bridge in Brownsville.
