DALLAS — Dallas police said a fleeing suspect died after officers used a Taser to subdue him late Saturday night.

A police spokesperson said officers were responding to a report of a robbery in the 2900 block of South Westmoreland Drive around 11:30 p.m. Saturday when they saw a man matching the description of the suspect.

As the suspect fled on foot, a pursuing officer used the electroshock weapon to take him down.

Police said Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics were called to the scene to treat the unnamed suspect; he died about 90 minutes later at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

No additional information about the incident has been released.

Tasers are widely used by law enforcement agencies as a way to subdue aggressive suspects without firing bullets or using physical force, although there have been a number of reports of injuries and deaths.

In May, a man was hospitalized in critical condition after Dallas police used a Taser to take him into custody.

Also this year, the Fort Worth City Council agreed to a $2 million settlement with the family of a mentally ill man who died after being shocked twice by police.
