CANTON, Texas - Jason Smith was deep in the woods with his son, Ivan, when he heard a faint sound Thursday.
It led him to a happy ending.
"It was pitch black, quiet," Smith said. "I could hear a faint chirping noise - something like a dog. So we just started walking this way."
What they found was three-year-old Zoe Smith, and her faithful pit bull, Brownie.
"She was standing right in here," Smith said, standing in a small clearing. "With her dog."
Zoe was excited to see Smith and his son.
"I was happy, happy!" the three year old told News 8.
Brownie, it seems, led Zoe through the woods and through some marshy forest.
"I got wet, and I was cold," Zoe said.
Wet and cold, but just fine.
Zoe told her mom Brownie "took her for a walk."
And her mom, Stephanie Smith, struggled to find words for the stranger who found her.
"There's not words to say, really, that can show my appreciation," Stephanie said.
As a matter of routine, Child Protective Services is investigating, but a source told News 8 that is standard procedure and no action is expected.
