AUSTIN, Texas -- More than the travel and shopping, Thanksgiving is exactly what its name implies -- it's a holiday of giving thanks.
Two sisters know that first hand, because this is their first Thanksgiving together. This reunion may not have happened without a boost from a social networking site.
Peggy Timmons and Lisa Kahr share some laughs looking at pictures of themselves together. But unlike most sisters who may have hundreds of pictures like these, Peggy and Lisa only have a few pictures of the two of them from this week -- their first significant time together. The sisters were born 14 months apart in Vero Beach, Florida. Peggy, the youngest, was adopted out at birth.
"She didn't even know I even existed," said Peggy Timmons.
But Lisa started to wonder whether she had more siblings when she looked at her birth certificate, noticed the number of children her mother had given birth to and realized things just didn't add up.
"I was like wait a minute there's only three of us and there's actually more," said Lisa Kahr.
In the meantime Peggy was growing up in Colorado. At 16, her adoptive parents gave her the name of her biological parents. She tracked them down and that led to a brief, but awkward meeting, when the sisters were in their early 20's.
"It did not go over very well at home, I was pretty upset at my mom," Lisa said.
"I was a little worried about that too," said Peggy.
"Just because I had always wanted a sister, a baby sister I had always wanted that," said Lisa.
The sisters lost touch and it would take nearly 20 years for them to be reunited. A recent chance posting on Facebook with someone in Vero Beach made it all happen.
"So he asked me do you by chance have a sister named Peggy and my hair stood up," Lisa said.
Lisa told the Facebook friend to give Peggy a phone number and tell her a woman named Amy knew how to get in touch with her sister. Peggy called the number, not knowing she was actually speaking to her sister.
"I said I understand you have information about Lisa and I would like to know and she said, Peggy this isn't Amy this is Lisa and the way she said her name, it's the way she says her A's I knew who it was," Peggy said.
The sisters vowed never to lose touch again. Peggy flew into town this week, just in time to celebrate their first Thanksgiving together.
"Very happy and thankful that she wanted to find me just like I wanted to find her," Lisa said.
"It is absolutely phenomenal, absolutely phenomenal and what better time of the season than to give thanks that we have each other," Peggy said.
