Driver dies when tanker truck overturns, explodes in east Texas

TYLER COUNTY, Texas – The driver of a tanker truck died early Friday morning when his truck overturned and exploded on Highway 69 in Hillister, the sheriff’s office said.

The Tyler County Sheriff’s Office said the truck was carrying gasoline, which ignited when the truck flipped onto its side near FM-1013.

Sheriff David Hennigan said the crash happened around 5:30 a.m. More than two hours later, firefighters were still working to put out the flames.

A nearby home also caught fire, reported KFDM News. Firefighters were able to get a couple out of the home safely.

Authorities later identified the killed truck driver as Jasper resident Bertis Wood, 58.

Area roads have since reopened.
