FORT WORTH, Texas -- Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst called a suburban Dallas police sergeant personally to seek the release of a relative jailed as a shoplifting suspect.
KXAS-TV of Fort Worth and Dallas aired an Allen Police Department recording Wednesday of Dewhurst's Aug. 3 telephone call after the arrest of a nephew's wife.
Dewhurst is heard reminding the desk sergeant that he was the perennial "No. 1 pick of all the law enforcement agencies in Texas." As such, he says he wants the sergeant "to do whatever is the proper thing."
He also asked for the cellphone number of a judge, which the sergeant did not provide.
Dewhurst spokesman Travis Considine says Dewhurst "acted as a concerned family member in an attempt to acquire information on how to post bail for his niece."
