DALLAS — Police are searching for several drivers who ran over a man who had been trying to help stranded motorists.
Ronald Glen Davis Jr. was returning to his Denton home with his wife and a friend at around 1:40 a.m. Sunday when they spotted two disabled vehicles blocking a lane of Stemmons Freeway near Royal Lane in northwest Dallas.
The 30-year-old decided to stop in front of the stalled cars and help.
“He would drop what he was doing to help somebody else,” said his wife, Jessica Brock Davis, through sobs. “The last words he told me was, ‘I love you.”
Shortly after stopping, Davis was hit by a sport utility vehicle, tossed across the median barrier and into the southbound lanes — where several more cars hit him.
“He flew over to the other lane,” Davis said. "Then I see multiple cars running over him. I got up and out of the car and kept hollering ‘is that my baby?!’”
Witnesses nearby had to stop Jessica Davis from darting into traffic to be with her husband. The two had been married six months ago.
“Every time I think about him flying, or the car hitting him... it was just like my whole world ended there,” the 23-year-old said. “When I think about it, my heart stops for a minute and then starts back up.”
One of the cars that struck Davis stopped briefly, but no one got out. Police are now searching for those motorists, who could face serious charges. They have not released a description of the vehicles being sought.
“I want them to pay for taking my husband's life,” Mrs. Davis said, “because he was just trying to help.”
