TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas -- Investigators continue to search for the driver that hit and killed an 8-year-old boy in Southeast Travis County over the weekend.
The Department of Public Safety says right now they have very little to go on and need the public's help to bring that driver to justice.
Traffic on U.S. Highway 183 near Burleson Road was flowing smoothly on Monday. There was no sign of the crash that killed Yahir Vidal Saturday night.
DPS officers tell KVUE Vidal was a passenger in a car driven by his grandfather, 53-year-old Juan Carlos Alonso. Their car hit a patch of ice on the roadway and had to stop.
Investigators say Vidal and his grandfather got out of their Ford Mustang. That's when a white Chevrolet crew cab pickup lost control on the ice, slammed into the child and his grandfather, then sideswiped another vehicle as it drove away.
“The roads were icy, the temperature was below freezing,” said DPS Lt. Ruben Garcia. “Based on witness statements and on the crash investigation, obviously the vehicle was not able to stop, was driving too fast and not able to stop in a timely manner.”
Yahir Vidal attended Baty Elementary in Del Valle where counselors are helping everyone deal with the tragic loss. His grandfather is in fair condition at a local hospital.
