CEDAR PARK, Texas -- A former Leander ISD bus driver has been arrested, charged with injury to a child.
Cedar Park police say 67-year-old Helmut Derer was driving a school bus Wednesday in the 200 block of Capulit Mountain when two students began fighting, a brother and sister.
The student's mother told KVUE News earlier this month she was allowed to view the bus surveillance video the incident.
According to the mother, her son and daughter were verbally arguing in the video. She says the driver stopped the bus and turned off the ignition. She says when the ignition turned off, the camera turned off. When the camera came back on, the mother says her nine-year-old son was lying in the seat crying.
She says the video shows Derer grabbing her son's shirt, shaking him so hard his student's head hit a wall. The student began kicking the driver, so Derer began kneeing the fourth grader.
Police now back up the mother's story saying, "Derer pushed the student down into a seat causing him to strike his head against the side of the bus. Derer then used his knee to strike the child’s leg also causing pain."
Derer was transported to the Williamson County Jail Friday.
Derer is no longer employed by the Leander school district. A spokeswoman for the district says he has worked for Leander ISD for eight years.
