AUSTIN -- Two people are dead after a head-on collision in North Austin.
It happened shortly before 1 a.m. in the 12000 block of North MoPac near Duval. Someone called 911 to report a car driving southbound in the northbound lanes of MoPac. Police sent squad cars and a helicopter, but they weren't able to find the driver.
The car eventually slammed into another vehicle head-on near Duval Road, sparking a fire.
A 40-year-old woman driving a Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. A man driving a Chevy was taken to a hospital in Round Rock where he later died. It is not clear who was driving the wrong way.
The scene took about three hours to clear.
"There's fluids everywhere. Battery acid, radiator fluids, everything that way. And plus one of the vehicles was on fire. Officers put it out with fire extinguishers, and then the fire department came in as fast as the fire and washed down all the fluids," Sgt. Darrell Burnham with APD said.
Police say it's too early to determine whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
