GRAPEVINE, Texas — Standing outside his front door, just 20 feet away from mounds of burned debris, Nicolas Wagoner recalls what happened an hour before he left his Grapevine apartment home on Saturday night.

"Me and my wife were expecting our first child," he said.

Then... moments after they arrived at Texas Health HEB Hospital...

"She's pushing, and my phone rings, and I thought it was a family member saying, 'Congratulations!'" he said. "The family members were saying, 'Your apartment's on fire!'"

Saturday night's five-alarm blaze destroyed new apartment buildings under construction at the Enclave at Grapevine development next door to Grapevine Mills shopping center.

A third building, which was supposed to begin accepting new tenants on Friday, suffered broken windows and burned awnings.

Wagoner — whose new apartment suffered no damage — says he was told by employees that the buildings may have been targeted.

"They said they saw some kids around here in this back building and maybe they thought it was arson," he said. "They thought it was a little too coincidental that something that's brand-spanking new would catch on fire like that."

Grapevine Deputy Fire Chief Mark Ashmead said he doesn't suspect foul play, but the fire marshal is investigating the cause to rule out any suspicious activity.

Wagoner is demanding some answers... for peace of mind and for the safety of his newborn son.

"That's not something that would make you sleep well at night," he said. "Who would want to think that there's some kids, adults or teenagers running around setting a blaze... especially in Grapevine?"
