SAN ANTONIO -- Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle in progress near Austin Highway Wednesday afternoon.
SAPD said officers received the call around 11:42 a.m.
A spokesperson with SAPD confirmed a San Antonio Fire Department ambulance was stolen from the 1400 block of Austin Highway. The unit was later recovered near Broadway, at the intersection of Grayson Street and Avenue B, just north of downtown.
A KENS 5 reporter at the scene said the ambulance wrecked into the back of a police cruiser in the middle of the intersection. A sergeant with SAPD confirmed the accident happened during the pursuit of the stolen ambulance.
An officer at the scene told KENS 5 the ambulance was stolen while paramedics were treating an injured person near Austin Highway. The injured individual was left behind with the paramedics when the suspect drove off.
The suspect then struck several cars during the pursuit, before hitting a final police cruiser at Grayson Street and Avenue B, according to police.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene of the wreck. Police said officers had to break the driver-side window of the ambulance to get to the suspect.
EMS was treating the man -- while in handcuffs and in the back of a police paddy wagon -- for minor injuries. No officers were injured.
