BEXAR COUNTY, Texas -- A police officer for the University of Texas at San Antonio died in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday while riding on FM 1560 near Galm and Shaenfield roads.
Sgt. Hector Barrera, 33, was traveling north when he hit the right rear door of a Jeep that turned in front of Barrera around 3 p.m., Bexar County deputies said.
The accident is still under investigation.
Barrera joined the UTSA Police Department in May of 2000 as a parking controller before entering the UT System Police Academy in January of 2003 and then commissioned as a police officer in June 2003, according to a press release.
"We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Sgt. Barrera," UTSA President Ricardo Romo was quoted saying. "His 11-year career, including seven years with the UTSA Police Department, was marked by exemplary service, professionalism and dedication. He was a great friend to the UTSA community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time."
Barrera served the UTSA Police Department until August 2004 before serving the Zapata County Sheriff's Office through July of 2005 and then the Starr County Sheriffs Office through October 2006. He returned to the UTSA Police Department in 2006, where he rose through the ranks to sergeant in September 2012.
He was also a member of the UT System's System Rapid Response team and the UTSA Honor Guard.
