TARRANT COUNTY, Texas — Four people died and several others were hurt in a crash involving three vehicles in far south Tarrant County early Sunday morning, paramedics said.
Emergency personnel responded to the accident in the 1500 block of Burleson Retta Road east of Spinks Airport just after midnight Saturday.
The crash happened moments after a woman and child came out of their home to help a stranded driver, authorities said. An oncoming vehicle hit them as they assisted with the broken down SUV.
A third vehicle drove into the crash scene, hitting the other two already-wrecked vehicles.
The woman, her child, and two people from inside one of the vehicles died at the scene.
Paramedics took nine people to Fort Worth-area hospitals. Two of them had critical injuries. Seven others had injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
Emergency workers from Fort Worth, Everman and Crowley fire departments worked together along with CareFlite to take patients to hospitals.
"Because of the way of the wreckage; because of the number of vehicles; because of the somewhat compact crime scene we have; a two-lane road and trees on either side; it makes it difficult to piece together exactly who was where at the time of the initial impact," said Terry Grisham, a spokesman for the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department.
Investigators say they found evidence that alcohol may have been a factor in the tragedy.
