SAN ANTONIO -- Four members of a family from Brackettville were killed in a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver early Sunday on Highway 90 near Loop 1604.
The victims have been identified as members of the Koontz family -- including sisters Marley and Madison Koontz, and parents Melissa and Ken Koontz.
The family's teenage son, Zach Koontz, was the sole survivor. He was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.
The family was on their home from a University Interscholastic League (UIL) competition in San Antonio when the accident occurred.
San Antonio police said the driver of an 18-wheeler was traveling east in the westbound lanes. He slammed head-on into the family's SUV.
The driver of the 18-wheeler, Ruben Galindo, was arrested and charged with four counts of intoxication manslaughter. He remained in jail as of Monday morning on a $1 million bond.
The school district in Brackettville, a town with a population of just under 2,000, posted the names of the family on its website on Sunday:
"We ask you to join our Brackett ISD family, students, parents, and community as we grieve the lose of four members of the Koontz family in a tragic accident early this morning. The Tiger Gym will be open at 1:00 PM, Sunday, April 14th, to pray, comfort, and support each other during this time of grief... May we all remember we have the comfort of our Lord and strength of each other to carry us through..."
Bracket ISD officials said there will be grief counselors at school on Monday.
