PLANO, Texas -- A Plano woman nearly beaten to death at a Mexico resort is in a North Texas hospital. But before investigators could file charges, the man they say attacked 45-year-old Laurie Burkes flew back to his Italian home.
Now, the Burkes family is pleading to have the suspect brought back to Mexico.
Burkes' daughter, Lauren, and close family friends have been holding vigil at Baylor University Medical Center's intensive care unit. Burkes was beaten severely at her condo in Playa del Carmen and taken by air ambulance jet back to Dallas.
"She had a broken jaw, two broken eye sockets, fractured skull, severe edema on the brain, four broken ribs and a lacerated liver," said Joe Miller, a family friend.
The suspect, 38-year-old Francesco Maggio, had been dating Burkes for a few months, but she recently ended the relationship. Emily Vandergryp of Plano and her son were staying with Burkes at the condo about 40 miles south of Cancun.
They went to the beach the day Burkes was attacked. Maggio was at the condo. When they returned, they found Burkes unconscious on the floor.
"She was having a difficult time breathing and her eyes were black and blood was coming from her nose and mouth," Vandergryp said.
Maggio managed to fly back to Italy before police could file charges. Now, family members are calling on Mexico's government to extradite him from Italy.
"We need the Mexican government to have pressure put on them, so they will extradite him back, so he can serve for his crime that he did," said Lauren Burkes, the victim’s daughter.
In the Playa del Carmen police report, a security guard told police that he saw Maggio leaving the condo with a suitcase.
"This person needs to be contained, so he can't do this to another human being," said Curtis Fowler, a family friend.
