AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Two of three brothers tried in federal court in Austin on money-laundering conspiracy counts have been convicted.
Hussein Ali “Mike” Yassine and Hadi Yassine also were convicted of multiple money-laundering counts by a jury on Friday. The same jury acquitted Mohammed Ali “Steve” Yassine of the lone money-laundering count against him. However, he remains in custody awaiting trial on separate indictments accusing him of narcotics trafficking and firearms violations.
Prosecutors accused Mike and Hadi Yassine of used their nine bars in downtown Austin to launder more than $200,000 in what they believed to be proceeds from drug trafficking. Both face up to 20 years in prison per count. No sentencing date has been set.
The Austin American-Statesman reports Yassine Enterprises was once downtown Austin’s biggest nightclub operator.
