A Bedford mother is now nationally recognized for rescuing an autistic child who was wandering on a busy highway.
It all played out for Stephanie Hines on Loop 820 in North Richland Hills on January 22, 2012. She called 911 for help.
HINES: "Oh my God!"
DISPATCHER: "He's in the freeway right now?"
HINES: "Yes. What do I do?"
DISPATCHER: "Just call and see if he can come over to you. Just tell him, try to get him out of the roadway. Is he listening to you?"
HINES: "I'm trying to get him. Come here, baby! Oh, I've got him!"
Hines, who received a Citizen in Action award in North Texas last April, received national honors Tuesday at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
The NG 911 Institute said she demonstrated exceptional heroism at a critical life-saving moment.
