AUSTIN -- It was a tearful night in the front yard of a Southeast Austin home Wednesday evening, as close to 40 friends and relatives gathered to remember 13-year-old Sophia Martinez.

The Austin teenager was unconscious at 11:28 a.m. New Years Day when she was dropped off at a home of some of her friends in the 2400 block of Lakehurst Drive near William Cannon and I-35 in Southeast Austin.

“Really I hope whoever was with her will come forward and say exactly what happened because we still don't know that yet. We're also hoping that it will make a lot of these young people realize what they're doing, who they're really hurting because they're not only hurting themselves, they're hurting family,” said Sylvia Vasquez, a family friend.

Austin police are expected to release more details in their investigation on Thursday.

In the meantime, the Martinez family said it desperately needs funds to help with the teenager’s burial expenses.

Anyone willing to help can contact Bank of America, Account # 586 03138 7504 in the name of Sylvia Vasquez.

As of Wednesday night no funeral arrangements for Sophia have been made.
