PLANO – Grammy award winning country artist Randy Travis pled not guilty to a simple assault charge in a Plano courtroom Friday, telling his fans to be skeptical of recent accusations against him.

Travis, 53, is accused of intervening during a dispute between girlfriend Mary Beougher and her estranged husband outside Prestonwood Baptist Church in August. Plano police issued Travis a citation for class C assault, a misdemeanor.

Travis entered his plea and asked the judge for a jury trial during Friday's hearing. His attorney said the singer was merely trying to defend his girlfriend and another woman.

Travis' only comment at court was to his fans.

"Don't believe everything you see and hear," he said. "Merry Christmas, have a happy and healthy New Year. God bless."

Travis will head to trial on March 11.

About two weeks before being cited for simple assault, Travis was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated near Tioga. State troopers said they found Travis naked following a one-car accident. He is accused of becoming combative and threatening the troopers' lives at the scene.

Travis was also arrested in February for public intoxication while he sat in his vehicle at a Sanger church parking lot.
