SAN ANTONIO – The sound of gunfire is nothing new at A Place to Shoot gun range. This time, however, it proved deadly.
San Antonio police officers were called to the range at 13250 Pleasanton Road after a 37-year-old man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound just before noon on Wednesday.
Police Sgt. George Antu said the victim rented a gun from the facility.
“He was actually shooting," Antu said. "Other shooters who were here heard him shooting downrange."
Police said witnesses saw him fall down but did not see the precious seconds before the shooting occurred. Officers said they don’t know if it was a suicide or an accident.
The first paramedic to try to help was already at the range as a customer. Police said he performed CPR on the victim but could not revive him.
“We don’t know if he was clearing a jammed weapon. We don’t know if he was trying to clean a weapon, and we don’t know if he actually pointed the gun at himself and pulled the trigger,” Antu said.
Outside, investigators searched the victim’s car for a note or other evidence of a motive.
The south-side shooting range was in the news just months ago after a golfer at nearby Mission Del Lago Golf Course was struck by a stray bullet.
That incident prompted modifications to the range’s rifle area.
