AUSTIN – A vote of approval from the Austin City Council Thursday paved the way for 30 more cabs to his Austin streets.

On the same day, the council also approved extending a moratorium preventing the issuance of new pedicab permits. Austin City Council believes more than 500 pedicabs on Austin streets is plenty for now.

The pedicab moratorium goes until April 2014.

“What happens when you're out here during the daytime. There's too many fishermen and not enough fish,” said cab driver Tyrone Bernard.

“Having choices just makes it easier for people to get around downtown. [It] makes it more convenient for them,” said Thomas Butler with the Downtown Austin Alliance.

“Another good thing about having lots of ways to get around downtown is that it gives people options on how they come downtown to begin with,” Butler said.
