SAN ANTONIO -- A worker at a cardboard manufacturing company had his leg amputated following an accident at the plant on Monday night.

The name of the victim was not immediately available.

Emergency crews were called to Bates Containers in the 10600 block of Fischer Road after the worker's leg became stuck between two large rollers that were described as 3 feet in diameter and 16,000 pounds each.

A Bexar County emergency team could not free the man from the machine. The San Antonio fire rescue team and a trauma surgical team from University Hospital then arrived to amputate the man's leg.

The procedure took nearly 20 minutes.

The victim was taken to University Hospital by helicopter. He was listed in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday morning.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
