FORT WORTH — Five people were injured on Highway 121 in Fort Worth early Sunday morning when a suspected drunk driver traveling the wrong way hit three other vehicles.

The accident happened west of Riverside Drive just before 4 a.m.  Witnesses said the wayward motorist, driving a Lincoln eastbound in the westbound lanes of the freeway, first slammed into a Dodge pickup truck as both drivers swerved unsuccessfully to avoid the collision.

The pickup rolled over on its roof, injuring three people inside.

The driver of the Lincoln, identified by police as 44-year-old Marcus Deon Burkley, then bounced his car off the guardrail and hit two additional vehicles; the driver of a Chevy Malibu sustained severe injuries; the other, driving a Mazda, was not hurt.

Burkley was also hospitalized, where he was placed under arrest for intoxication assault causing serious bodily injury.
