Delays investigating assault fuels anger in small Texas town
05:24 PM CST on Thursday, February 26, 2009
Zexton Moshay believes he’s always given people in his hometown of Ganado the benefit of the doubt.
“I don’t bother nobody in this town. I don’t cause nobody no harm. I was sitting on a log, got knocked smooth out. Got knocked out,” he said.
But that’s become a little more difficult, ever since the brutal beating he suffered at a backyard party three months ago. He calls it a hate crime.
“He came up to me and started calling me all kinds of racial names, Obama lover N,” he said.
Moshay said he was the only black person in attendance that night. He said he was invited by a friend who witnessed the incident.
Charles Demmer is Moshay’s friend.
“I’ve never seen anyone beaten up as bad as he was,” said Demmer.
Moshay said he’s still in pain and suffers from dizziness and headaches.
Hospital records indicate that his injures include a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain, and a broken nose.
More disturbing to Moshay is the fact that his attacker has never been arrested or charged.
“If it had been me, I’d be in jail,” he said.
“This is Jackson County. One of those things you just throw underneath the rug and forget about,” said Demmer.
Jackson County Sheriff Andy Louderback blames the delay on the time it has taken detectives to interview witnesses.
“There’s no reason at all to think we’re not going to do what we’re supposed to do here. None,” he said.
Local activist Erskin Hill disagrees.
“We’re going to be asking for an outside investigation by the Texas Rangers or maybe even have the FBI get involved,” he said.
Meanwhile, Moshay says he’s recovering and waiting for justice.
