Curry County rethinking jail security after inmates escape through roof
05:17 PM CDT on Sunday, August 31, 2008
CLOVIS, N.M. -- A Curry County official said he plans to release an action plan next week for the jail after the escape of eight inmates, four of whom are still at large.
County Manager Lance Pyle said he’ll release the plan after he evaluates the recommendations of a detention expert and state police to assess the jail.
The inmates, including convicted killer Edward Salas and murder suspect Larry McClendon Jr., 19, cut a hole in the roof of the jail Aug. 24 and escaped.
Pyle also has established a jail management board to oversee the facility
District Attorney Matt Chandler said state police are investigating what happened leading up to the escape.
The escapees got out of their pods via two different doors and then climbed up plumbing pipes to a hole they had cut in the roof using handmade implements. They were discovered by a Clovis police officer who spotted two inmates in orange jumpsuits running near the jail.
Law enforcement, jail officials and county administrators have yet to address why jail employees were not aware of the escape that took hours to complete.
No jail employees have been disciplined, fired or placed on leave, or have voluntarily resigned since the escape, Pyle said.
Chandler says deputies are continuing to receive tips about the escapees, which include Salas, McClendon, Michael England, 29, of Clovis, who was being held on charges of tampering with evidence and being a felon in possession of a firearm and Louis Chavez, 18, of Albuquerque, who was charged with aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, receiving stolen property and extreme cruelty to animals.
Chandler said “multiple tips” are being received and officers “are very optimistic that they are making progress and getting close to the remaining four escapees.”
