Cash-strapped clotheshorses start sewing

DALLAS -- In today's economy, so many of us are learning how to do things for ourselves.

Sewing clubs are popping up all over North Texas, because of it.

The demand to be able to fix our own hems, create pillow shams, even make a child's outfit - is way up.

Stitch and save is a combination Jodie Carlson says is keeping her out of arrears.

"I have a truck - at $4.69 a gallon, it's very painful to fill up," she said.

Carlson makes everything from dog collars and scrap books, to what could be expensive drapes.

"I went to Restoration Hardware and looked at embroidered drapes. All they had was embroidery going down the sides and they were like $200 a panel," she said.

"Well, I found [this material] on sale. Silk... and made each panel for $30 a piece," she added.

Bernina Sewing Center says sewing clubs have become all the rage. Some have had to add new classes to keep up with demand.

"Some do see the savings and they do have sticker shock when they go to a boutique or a store. Skirts do cost $100," said Carlson.

Skirts can be made at home for about $20.

The sewing clubs teach new ideas, tricks to create items, and not just clothing.

Carlson says learning is quick and easy.

In the space of this interview, she's created a pillow case for less than $5.
