It's heeeere: Gas hits $4 a gallon in Texas
10:46 AM CDT on Sunday, May 25, 2008
DALLAS — Four-dollar gasoline debuted in Dallas Friday to herald a Memorial Day weekend of record-high prices across Texas and the the nation.
The AAA Texas gas price survey found regular self-serve averaged $3.73 per gallon, 5 cents more than last week. Nationally, the average price rose 6 cents to $3.83 per gallon.
But at least one Dallas gas station is way ahead of that curve.
On Friday morning, the One Stop Express Shell outlet at McKinney and Maple avenues in the city's Uptown district was selling regular for $4.20; premium for $4.60; and diesel for $4.80.
"Wow!" said Perry Wallace as he stopped to refuel. "That's a little bit too high, isn't it? My wife filled up for $4 yesterday, and I didn't realize that this had gone up this high. Wow!"
Wallace bought $30 worth of fuel and said his next stop is the car dealership looking for either a hybrid vehicle or at least something that's more fuel efficient.
"I think it's outrageous," said motorist Brian Wherry, who resigned himself to the higher price. "Can't do anything; got to fill my tank."
Another motorist was going to fill up and grab a sandwich at the Dickey's barbeque stand inside the convenience store. He left with some fuel, but without any food.
"A gallon of gas is more expensive than a barbeque sandwich," he said. "Never thought I'd see the day."
"Texas travelers will encounter the highest averages ever recorded for a gallon of gasoline," said AAA Texas spokeswoman Rose Rougeau. "We estimate about 1.95 million people will be driving to their holiday destination, down slightly compared to last Memorial Day weekend."
The survey showed the most expensive gasoline in Texas was found in Amarillo, where the average price rose 5 cents this week to $3.75. The cheapest gasoline was in El Paso, where the average price rose 4 cents to $3.67 per gallon.
