Mom tries to give up infant at Dallas library
07:28 AM CST on Wednesday, January 9, 2008
A homeless woman told Dallas police Monday night that she wanted to give up her 4-month-old son because it would be best for him. But Child Protective Services was working Tuesday to keep the family together.
The woman told police at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in downtown that she wasn’t able to support the baby and couldn’t take care of him, a police report said. The woman said she was from Oregon and had been in Dallas for about five months. She said she was living at the Salvation Army.
Both mother and child were transferred to CPS, police said.
The baby showed no signs of physical abuse, said Marissa Gonzales, a spokeswoman with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
The agency plans to try to offer the mother assistance to help her raise her son, Gonzales said. If the mother still feels she can’t raise the child, he would likely be put up for adoption.
The agency wants to work with parents who want to give up their children, Gonzales said.
“If there’s anything we can do to strengthen that family in any way or find relatives, then that’s the way to go,” she said.
Charges aren’t typically filed in cases in which the mother “hadn’t done any injury to the child because she’s trying to find some means of protection for the baby,” said Sgt. Brenda Nichols, supervisor of Dallas’ child abuse unit.
For infants, the state’s Baby Moses law allows parents to leave healthy babies up to 60 days old at a hospital, fire station or other medical emergency facility without the threat of prosecution.
