Port Arthur residents worried about a toxic neighbor

The chemicals will come from Indiana.

A military contractor is shipping VX wastewater to Port Arthur for disposal. As you might imagine, neighbors said they’re worried.

In this quiet Port Arthur neighborhood, Jimmie Williams backyard is a paradise, but he said somethings not right.

“I get concerned about it with some of the odors that we have,” Williams said. He said the odors are coming from the Veolia Environmental Services plant a few miles away.

The U.S. Army contracted the plant to incinerate contaminated waste produced by the destruction of a liquid nerve gas.

The product is being shipped from a post in Indiana, much to the dismay of Williams and his neighbors.

“Other states would not let it be dumped there so why should it be dumped on us?” he said.

Environmental groups claim the incineration process may be putting the people of Port Arthur in danger.

“We are talking about the most toxic substance known to mankind,” forensic chemist Michael Sommer. “The tip of a safety pin immersed the smallest amount in this substance and touched to your hand — you’ll die within 15 minutes.”

That’s why neighbors protested the plant’s plan to burn the waste. The company says it’s meeting all government emission standards and was quick to answer questions.

“We operate under very tight emission limits and our system is set up ... the logic in our computer system is set up to insure we don’t exceed our permits as much as possible,” Veolia spokesman Mitch Osborne.

The Veolia Plant says it could be the end of next year before it finishes incinerating this controversial waste.

Now some neighbors are worried more may be coming their way.

“It’s going to set a precedent for this place to really become a dumping ground for all kinds of hazardous waste,” resident Warren Field said.

They plan to continue trying to stop the plant from burning the waste. They are losing so far, but they’re not giving up.
