Claims of campaign sign-snatching spread in Farmers Branch
12:37 PM CDT on Tuesday, March 27, 2007
FARMERS BRANCH - With less than two months left until residents in Farmers Branch vote on whether to ban illegal immigrants from renting in the city, accusations are afloat that the campaigning is getting ugly.
While signs for and against the immigration ordinance have popped up across the area, some say signs have started to disappear.
Tim Scott, who is running for City Council, said he has kept his eyes open since allegations of campaign-signs-gone-missing have spread.
"Every time I look past my window, I kind of look to see if it is still there," he said of his own sign in his yard.
Scott supports Ordinance 2903, which would effectively ban illegal immigrants from renting in the city.
With some of his signs being the ones allegedly swept up, Scott said he has his own opinions on who may be involved.
"I think it is kind of interesting that our signs were found in one of the vehicles of the opposition's most outspoken supporter," he said.
The supporter Scott referred to is Elizabeth Villafranca, who was detained by police after someone reported that in addition to planting her own signs, she was picking up and taking others.
"When the police officer asked me to open my trunk, you know, I opened it because I had nothing to hide," she said.
But police documents stated they found two signs in her vehicle. However, it also revealed that Villafranca said she was told by the landlord of the shopping center that the signs should be removed, which the landlord verified.
"He is the boss," she said. "He is the owner of that shopping center. If he is giving me an order, you better believe I am going to do it."
However, state law states that you are not supposed to touch campaign signs unless you are the owner or the person who placed them in the ground. The people who made the complaint to the police said they will press charge. Meanwhile, Villafranca said it should be the other way around. Stating she is concerned with harassment, she said she has contacted the Justice Department.
