Six Flags Over Texas goes trans fat free

04:52 PM CST on Tuesday, February 20, 2007

WFAA.com Staff Report

DALLAS - When families head to Six Flags this spring and summer, one thing will be missing.

But parents probably won't mind, and kids won't miss it.

Six Flags Over Texas is dropping trans fats from the menu, with one exception. Funnel cakes!

Trans fats are found in many processed foods and solid forms of fats, like shortenings and some margarines. The danger, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is that there is a direct relationship between consuming foods high in trans fats and elevated LDL -- or "bad" -- cholesterol. That can increase a person's risk of coronary heart disease, the number one killer in the United States.

Last week, the mayor of Philadelphia signed a trans fat ban that requires restaurants and bakeries to go trans fat free by September. New York City was the first to institute such a ban. Big food chains like TGI Fridays, Burger King and McDonald's have either gone trans fat free, already, or are looking to do so in the next year or two. Even Girl Scouts got on the bandwagon, this year, selling cookies with less than half of a gram of trans fats per serving.

Six Flags Over Texas 2007 season begins March 10. It's newest feature is the show, Cirque Dreams Coobrila. The park will also stay open one hour later than usual (until 11:00 p.m.) from June 16 to August 19.
