Lawmaker challenges license plate frame law
06:29 PM CST on Friday, February 16, 2007
Most cars have license plate frames.
The items promote everything from a car dealership to your favorite sorority or sports team.
But according to the law the frames are illegal if they block or obscure the state name or pictorial design even if just partially.
If you get caught the penalty is a misdemeanor, and drivers could be fined and even jailed for up to 180 days.
State Representative Harold Dutton has filed a bill to change the law and make it less strict and much clearer. “Rather than just being obscure, it would have to significantly impair your license plate, which I think all of intended when we passed this bill in the first place.”
The legislature first passed the law 4 years ago.
Just earlier this week the Texas Court of Criminals Appeals re-affirmed it after it was challenged in court.
Dutton says the law needs to be changed.
