Former scout leader gets 14 years for child porn

08:33 AM CST on Friday, December 8, 2006

Associated Press

EDINBURG, Texas -- A former Boy Scout leader and coach who pleaded guilty to a federal child pornography charge was sentenced to 14 years in prison Thursday.

Genaro Vela, 58, was among 125 people arrested nationwide in an Internet child pornography case in which subscribers purchased photos and videos of children engaged in sex acts with adults, federal authorities said.

Vela led Boy Scout Troop 83 in Mission for decades and was a teacher and track coach in the Mission school district.

“He is extremely disappointed in the sentence,” his attorney, Santos Maldonado, said in a story for Friday’s editions of The McAllen Monitor.

Vela pleaded guilty in September to one charge of receiving child pornography. In exchange, federal prosecutors dropped a second child pornography charge against him.

Vela also is scheduled for trial this month on state charges of sexual indecency with a child and sexual assault of a child.

The pornography case stems from a search of Vela’s home this summer by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and Mission police. Authorities found a hidden staircase that led to a room where they recovered disks containing thousands of images of child pornography.

By then, Mission police had interviewed former Boy Scouts who alleged he abused them. Some said the abuse happened decades ago.
