Health officials in Collin County said a Dallas resident died this week after eating raw oysters at a restaurant in Plano.
The identity of the victim and the name of the restaurant were not released.
Collin County Health Care Services spokesperson Jamie Nicolay said restaurants are required to alert customers to the risks associated with uncooked shellfish or other raw animal protein.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends against eating raw oysters or other raw shellfish.
In a news release, Nicolay said oysters can be contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio vulnificus, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
