Rare stork sighting in Rio Grande Valley
10:35 AM CDT on Sunday, August 24, 2008
RAYMONDVILLE, Texas -- The rare sighting of a jabiru stork in the Rio Grande Valley has created quite a stir among birders.
Ruth Hoyt, a professional photographer, heard the 5-foot-tall stork had been spotted in Willacy County after a friend told her about his sighting earlier this month. She spotted the bird herself and took a photo.
The jabiru, which has a wingspan of 8 feet, is native to Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula south to Argentina. Earlier this month, a jabiru was sighted in Louisiana, but it’s not known if this is the same bird.
The bird is rarely seen in the United States.
