SAN ANTONIO -- A three-alarm fire Friday afternoon at the Studio 6 Extended Stay Hotel sent more than 100 firefighters racing to put out the flames, which were intensified by strong gusts of wind.

Authorities evacuated the 117-suite building around 4:30 Friday afternoon at U.S. 281 North and East Rhapsody. SAFD Chief Charles Hood reported all 80 guests made it out safely and were accounted for.

Hood said the fire started on the ground floor, but the cause is still a mystery.

According to the hotel's website, all suites are fully equipped with kitchens.

Firefighters experienced a scare when a portion of the roof collapsed, appearing to hit nearby firefighters. However, no firefighters were hurt.

When the roof collapsed, Hood said firefighters implemented a defense approach and let one of the hotel's buildings burn.

In response to the fire, officials closed the access road of U.S. 281 North. Smoke floated out over the highway for a couple of hours after the fire started. There were traffic delays in the area throughout the evening rush hour.
