HOUSTON –- Firefighters said gusty winds made it difficult to fight a blaze at a Taco Bell restaurant on Westheimer late Monday.
The restaurant, located near Dairy Ashford, caught fire sometime around 7 p.m., according to the Houston Fire Department.
HFD said a patron ran back in the restaurant to notify employees that smoke was coming from the roof. When firefighters arrived, they found flames coming from a small area, but it spread very quickly due to the wind.
“They got some water on the fire, but they couldn’t overcome the amount of wind that was driving the fire and getting it bigger,” said an HFD captain. “It got into the interior space of the attic area, and we couldn’t get enough water on it fast enough to defeat the wind driving the fire.”
The center of the building’s roof eventually collapsed, destroying the restaurant.
Several people passing by on the busy roadway captured cell phone video of the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
