S.C. caregiver stole from 93-year-old woman

Orangeburg deputies say caregiver stole from 93-year-old woman

Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) - An Orangeburg County woman is being accused of stealing thousands of dollars from an elderly woman who she was taking care of.

Melinda Lee, 50, is charged with exploitation of a vulnerable adult.

According to deputies, the victim's daughter told them in August that there might be missing money from the 93- year-old victim's account, after noticing questionable transactions. At the time, Lee worked as a nursing assistant who was visiting the victim's home twice a day.

Investigators were able to determine that one of the victim's cards had been used by Lee at several locations over a five-month period beginning in March.  All told, investigators think the woman took more than $4,100 of the victim's money.

“This is pretty low when you’re acting as a caregiver and in your place of meeting the needs of a vulnerable lady, you take money knowing this victim doesn’t have the ability to protect her property,” Sheriff Leroy Ravenell. “That’s simply unacceptable by any scope of the imagination.”

Other agencies say they're trying to determine if they have illegal transactions made by her in their area.
