Race for Harris Co. DA heats up, prosecutor defends jailing victim

Prosecutor defends jail victim decision.

HOUSTON - The race for Harris County District Attorney is gaining national attention because of a rape victim who was held in jail for nearly a month.

A political ad for the challenger, Kim Ogg, features the mother of a rape victim. In the ad, the woman criticizes District Attorney Devon Anderson for what happened to her daughter.

Prosecutors say putting the victim behind bars was necessary to ensure that the young woman would return to court to testify against a serial rapist.

On Thursday, Prosecutor Nick Socias and his attorney, Rusty Hardin, released emails they say show he offered to release the victim, Jenny, to her mother if she could make sure she would re turn to testify. The mother reportedly declined.

The mother has filed a lawsuit against Socias and the Harris County DA's Office.
