AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas state senator who leads the committee in charge of state prisons says a prison informant reported a death threat against him.
State Sen. John Whitmire (D-Houston) says he was told by authorities that an informant reported a "hit" against him due to complaints about the conditions on death row. Whitmire said Monday that he's taking the threat seriously.
The Houston Democrat chairs the Senate Criminal Justice Committee.
The Austin American-Statesman first reported the threat.
Whitmire says authorities are still tracking down leads on the case.
News of the threat comes one week after the Colorado corrections department chief was gunned down and the suspected shooter died in a shootout in Texas.
Texas Department of Criminal Justice inspector general Bruce Toney says authorities are investigating the allegation.
