LEAGUE CITY, Texas -- Republican state Rep. Randy Weber has won the U.S. House race to succeed Ron Paul in his Southeast Texas district.

Weber beat Democrat Nick Lampson Tuesday.

Paul’s retirement after eight consecutive terms left open his seat in the 14th Congressional District, which includes Galveston and other areas on the Gulf Coast near Houston. Democrats saw an opening with Paul out. It was one of just a few U.S. House races in Texas seen as competitive.

But Weber was able to hold the seat for Republicans. He beat Lampson, who served 10 years in Congress in two separate stretches.

Weber served four years in the Legislature and proved to be one of its most conservative members.
